COCKROACHES: FACTS, IDENTIFICATION & CONTROL

Cockroaches can wreak havoc on your home. To win the war in cockroach control, here’s what you should know:

  • Entry: Cockroaches can enter your home in many different ways, from the outside through cracks and crevices, vents, sewer and drain pipes. We even bring them in on products like grocery bags, boxes, purses and on our person!
  • Ideal environment: Your home is an ideal breeding ground for certain pest species of cockroaches. With plenty of food, warmth, water and nesting sites, they can remain active all year round.
  • Reproduction: Cockroaches reproduce quickly. For every one you see there can be many, many more hiding and multiplying behind your walls.
  • Evasiveness: Because cockroaches typically are nocturnal, if you’ve seen one, you probably haven’t seen them all. The few cockroaches you see by day could mean they were likely forced out by overcrowding; a possible sign of severe infestation.
  • Allergies/Asthma: The debris created by cast-off cockroach skins, dead bodies and droppings can aggravate allergies, especially in children and sensitive individuals.
  • Do-it-yourself ineffectiveness: Cockroaches are better at hiding than you are at finding them, and their eggs are naturally protected from many over-the-counter insecticides. Without special equipment, materials, and know-how, cockroach control can be a losing battle.

AMERICAN COCKROACH

  • Appearance: About one to one and a half inches long, reddish-brown wings with light markings on the thorax.
  • Diet: Scavengers, eats almost anything; commonly found in food preparation areas. Attraction to alcoholic beverages, especially beer.
  • Habits: Very aggressive, prefers warm-damp areas. More likely to be seen in daytime & outdoors than other species of roaches. Can live up to 15 months.

GERMAN COCKROACH

  • Appearance: About 5/8 of an inch long, light to medium brown with two dark longitudinal lines on the thorax.
  • Diet: Scavengers, eats almost anything.
  • Habits: Nocturnal. Will infest areas close to food, moisture & warmth. This is the most common roach found in & around homes, apartments, supermarkets, and restaurants.

BROWNBANDED COCKROACH

  • Appearance: About 5/8 of an inch long, wings have two brownish-yellow bands.
  • Diet: Scavengers, eats almost anything.
  • Habits: Can be confused with the German roach. Not dependent on moisture as other species.

SMOKYBROWN COCKROACH

  • Appearance: About one and a half inches long and dark brown.
  • Diet: Scavengers, eats almost anything but mainly feeds on plant material.
  • Habits: Will fly towards a light at night. Numerous in the Southeastern United States.

ORIENTAL COCKROACH

  • Appearance: About one inch long and dark brown in color.
  • Diet: Scavengers, mainly feeds on plant material.
  • Habits: The Surinam roach burrows & lives outdoors. You will find this roach in potted plants and garden environments. By bringing potted plants indoors the Surinam roach can then infest the home.

PEST FACTS & TIPS FOR HOMEOWNERS

  • Remove food & water sources. The home is an ideal breeding spot and roaches can remain active all year round.
  • Remove build-up of dead leaves & waste from around your house.
  • Move compost piles away from the house.
  • Dispose of excess cardboard boxes and papers bags.
  • Rinse recyclable waste materials like jars & cans before discarding in recycle bins.
  • Store food in air tight containers.
  • Roaches can enter your home in many different ways. Caulk and/or seal any cracks, holes, crevices, sewer & drain pipes where roaches can harbor.
  • Don’t leave your pet’s food out over night.
  • Don’t leave dirty dishes in the sink. Submerge them in water & detergent if there is no time to wash them.
  • Roaches multiply quickly. For every one you see there are hundreds more in & around your home.
